about nature. i have always had an appreciation for the beauty of it but the function is the truly amazing part. in nature things are simple. they are what they are. i had a dog once who had been living her life as a stray and she had reverted back to her wild self and stayed that way for most of her life. she had difficulty fitting in with the rest of the civilized world but had bonded with me so fiercely that she became unwillingly to see any other life for herself. i have seen that more than once in a stray or in an abused animal. civilation complicates things. take the dragon lady as another example. she is sick and is prone to the most disgusting of intestinal problems and winters are a very trying time for her and for me and usually involve meds and vet bills and a lot of nose pinching. bearded dragons eat insects and they eat veggies. in summer months she eats fresh food right out of the yard. mulberries from my tree, wild strawberries from the yard, raspberries from the garden. moths off the side of the garage wall. she eats sorrel which grows out of the cracks of sidewalks everywhere and nasturtium & squash blossoms which i plant for her. this year i planted kale and mustard greens and collards and i hate to admit it but i am a lazy gardener and most of what i plant gets overgrown and weedy and well it's not a pretty sight but i had a bumper crop of greens this year and i kept her in fresh food all summer. she thrives on fresh food and loves to eat fresh food. in winter she will turn her nose up at most anything i offer. it's a pretty funny sight to see actually but that simply should tell us all something. if a bearded dragon knows when vegetables from the grocery are spoiled or old or laden with chemicals why don't we know. i daresay we do. we just don't care. i think i would have no stomach issues and digestive problems if i were eating better food. not that i'm going to eat better food mind you but i'm just saying! if it were easier i suppose i would but things are just not simple anymore. we have jobs that are stressful and houses that need repair at the very least or decorated/remodeled if you give two shits which i do not. we grow gardens to look beautiful and do not grow gardens that feed us. not that there's anything wrong with feeding your soul but what is important is survival and keeping fed and warm and dry.
birds build amazing homes out of pieces of grass and sticks and string and i have even found husky hair in some of the nests around my house. in other words recycling and keeping it simple and what is more beautiful than a birds nest and the process by which it is made. i have sat for hours in my yard and watched birds building nests and always am thrilled when i stumble upon one that has been left in the branches of my trees or tucked away in the bushes outside my window. i found this nest while trimming my bushes to make way for a ladder that will reach the roof to do some shingle repair. simply beautiful. later...love g
